All About Rolling Ridge Study Retreat Community

Come visit! From Route 9 take Mission Road South six miles to the Rolling Ridge sign. Turn left on the gravel road and follow the signs to the Retreat and Community houses. Contact Bob Sabath at 304-724-6653 to arrange your retreat experience.

Welcome to Rolling Ridge Study Retreat! The retreat house is the main facility situated amidst beautiful woodlands on 1400 acres of mountain wilderness near Harpers Ferry, West Virginia.

The retreat house accommodates groups of 12 to 16 persons and includes six bedrooms, a living/meeting room, a dining area to seat up to 20, a fully furnished kitchen, a library, and three bath facilities.

Rooms are modestly comfortable with a rustic simplicity. The building is heated with an attractive woodstove and is well insulated and ventilated but not air conditioned.

Bird watching is a popular activity from the deck or screened porch of the retreat house.

A short walk from the retreat house are two other facilities, an art cottage, open to all guests for artistic play, and a meditation shelter, for prayer at any time.

The art cottage is popular with retreatants both young and old, where they can explore their creative selves with materials for drawing, painting, craft, sculpture, and collage.

The meditation shelter is a ten sided prayer and worship space used frequently by both retreatants and day visitors in every season.

The simple design inside the meditation shelter with moveable benches, allows for various worship experiences and numbers of people.

Just outside the meditation shelter is a labyrinth for walking meditation.

Throughout the property Nature itself encourages stillness and prayer.

Cordwood Cottage

Just behind the art cottage is a building in progress constructed of cordwood, straw bale, rock, and clay — an innovation in green building and the prototype for the fifth staff house to be built. Check out the living roof!

Rolling Ridge has a number of trails for meditative walks, hiking, and enjoying an immersion in the wonder of the natural world.

Ridge to River Trail

The Ridge to River trail is maintained by the Appalachian Trail Club and runs up to the AT on the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains and down to the Shenandoah River.

A magnificent panoramic view of the valley can be seen from the top of the ridge.

The Shenandoah River provides a wonderful place for sitting and picnicking as well as launching canoes and kayaks.

The residential/staff community resides across the creek from the retreat house. Inquire about guest facilities if the retreat house is full.
